Electric bike rider arrested after loaded firearm seized in Limerick city

An e-bike cyclist was arrested in the King’s Island area of ​​Limerick City in the early hours of Friday morning after local police seized a loaded firearm which the cyclist was hiding in a bag.

The arrest was made by uniformed gardaí who were on a routine night patrol of the city.

According to Gardaí, uniformed officers were on routine patrol at around midnight on Friday (June 28) when they “encountered a man on an electric bicycle on Island Road in Limerick city”.

A Garda spokesman said that “upon observation by Gardai the driver abandoned the electric bike and fled the scene on foot”.

“When the man was stopped a short distance away he attempted to throw away a bag. When the bag was recovered Gardaí seized a loaded firearm.”

The man, described by gardaí as being in his twenties, was arrested at the scene and detained at Limerick Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939.

Garda officers said the firearm was to be sent to the Garda Ballistics Unit for analysis and that inquiries were currently ongoing.
