Police describe a brutal week in Las Vegas, 2 shootings involving officers

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – After a violent week in the Las Vegas Valley, police released details about two officer-involved shootings Friday afternoon.

On Tuesday morning, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to reports of an intruder with a knife at a home in the 2000 block of Valley Drive, near Rancho Drive in downtown Las Vegas.

The incident happened just after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday when 911 dispatchers received a call about a man, later identified as Matthew Tindall, breaking into a home and trying to stab the residents. The caller told dispatchers, “He’s going to kill us.”

According to police, Tindall went to the backyard of the home before moving to a neighboring home and attempting to stab another victim. When officers confronted him, he dropped the eight-inch kitchen knife he was armed with. When Tindall leaned down to pick it up, officers fired five shots at him.

Tindall was taken to custody where paramedics treated his injuries.

Police said one of the victims in the incident suffered superficial stab wounds and added that she was fine.

The second shooting this week involving LVMPD officers occurred Wednesday at 6400 Boulder Highway near Russell Road in East Las Vegas.

It was there, just after 4:30, that the police received information about a person with a knife. When officers arrived, they found a man, later identified as Robert Kunhart, walking through the parking lot with a folding knife and a box cutter. Police described his behavior as “agitated.”

Police say responding officers attempted to stop Kunhart and detain him before Kunhart turned on the officer and approached him. The officer used “less lethal” options, but investigators said Kunhart was “unfazed.”

In the body camera footage, Kunhart can be heard telling officers, “Shoot me.” The officers then returned fire. Kunhart was taken to a local hospital, where he was listed in “stable” condition.

The two shootings are the sixth and seventh by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers in 2024.
