New Age | Five hanged as death row inmates escape Bogura prison

Five people, including two correctional officers and three guards, were suspended under two separate orders on Wednesday and Thursday after four death row inmates escaped from the Bogura district prison early Wednesday morning.

The Prisons Command, in an order on Thursday, suspended Bogura District Jail deputy warden Md Hossainuzzaman and head warden Farid Uddin, Bogura prison officials said.

Earlier on Wednesday, district jail director Md Anwar Hossain suspended three jailers, namely Dulal Uddin, Adbul Matin and Ariful Islam.

Bogura deputy commissioner Md Saiful Islam told New Age on Friday that he was aware of the suspension of five people in connection with the case.

“The prison buildings were built during the British rule. The condition of the prison is currently deplorable,” he said, adding that neither the prison authorities nor the Public Works Department had informed the district authorities about the poor condition of the prison.

The prison break occurred in the early morning hours of June 26, when prisoners escaped from the prison through the roof of the convicts’ cell.

The authorities reacted quickly and arrested the escaped convicts near the Chelopara Bridge the same day.

The Department of Corrections has constituted a three-member inquiry committee into the matter. The committee has been asked to submit its report within four working days, starting Thursday.
