Rape: Retired Army Rifleman Sentenced to 20 Years in Jail for Raping Orphan

Hyderabad: A 17-year-old orphan was waiting at a bus stand in Secunderabad when a man approached her and started a conversation. He also asked her if she wanted something to eat before forcibly taking her away on his bike and taking food to a nearby hotel.
He later took her to a hotel and raped her twice. He dumped her at Secunderabad railway station and fled. This incident occurred one morning in July 2017.

Seven years later, the 66-year-old man retired gunner Indian Army, was convicted for raping a girl and sentenced to 20 years in prison. The accused, Periyati Sridharan, was 59 years old and retired Army when he sexually assaulted the girl, who is now 24 and finishing school. Announcing the verdict on Friday, B. Pushpalatha, special session judge on cases related to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act in Hyderabad, also awarded ₹5 lakh compensation for rape survivor.
During the trial, the girl gave a graphic description of how she was forcibly taken away and raped. The testimony of the caretaker of the nursing home where she was staying and medical evidence were crucial, said additional public prosecutor K. Prathap Reddy.
The orphan was staying in a nursing home and was learning tailoring at an institute in Secunderabad. Sridharan approached her while she was on her way to the tailoring institute.
The girl first informed the caretaker of the nursing home about her situation and three days later filed a complaint with the police. Sridharan, a resident of Yapr-al, was subsequently arrested.
