Jay Slater’s best friend heard him ‘going off the road’ and ‘going down rocks’ in last phone call before he disappeared

A friend of missing Jay Slater claims he heard the teenager “driving off the road” and “going down a hill” during their last phone call.

Jay, 19, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, has been missing in Tenerife for almost two weeks after traveling to a festival on the island.

The bricklayer apprentice was last heard from on Monday, June 17, when he was talking to his friend Lucy Law at around 8.50am. He admitted that he “didn’t know where he was.”

It later emerged that Jay had been walking in a mountainous region several hours from his accommodation, having gone with two men to an Airbnb in the area the previous evening.

Jay’s friend Brad revealed details of his last conversation with the teenager in an interview today (June 28) This morning, claiming that he hears

Jay’s feet were “slipping” down the hill as they talked.

“He was walking down the road, talking on the phone, and he kind of went down—not a big drop, but a little drop, and he was going down, and he said, ‘I’ll call you back, I’ll call you back.’ I’ll call you back, because I think someone else called him,” Brad explained.

“If he had thought like me, he would have gone back up the mountain and started up the path again… He wouldn’t have come down this far.

He added: “I knew he had gone off the road because I heard walking on gravel… stones.”

Brad added that neither he nor Jay were concerned about his location because they didn’t know he was an 11-hour walk away.

“I said (to Jay), ‘Enter your location,’ and he said, ’15 minutes drive or 14 hours walk, I don’t know if that’s true or not,’ and I said, ‘If it’s just a 15-minute drive, catch a taxi.”

Brad came after Jay’s friend Lucy also revealed details of their phone conversation, saying Jay had 1% battery left, was thirsty and had cut his leg on a cactus.

Meanwhile, police in Tenerife have appealed to volunteers to help with the large-scale search for Jay, who went missing 11 days ago.
