New Delhi: The upcoming Euro 2024 clash between Switzerland and Italy has gained an extra layer of intrigue due to the suspension of young Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori, a development that forces Italy to change their strategy and potentially gives Switzerland a significant advantage on the pitch.

Richard Calafiori (21) showed impressive performances, especially the attacking ability he showed while playing for Basel, many were excited about his integration into the Italian national team. Calafiori’s ability to read the game, intercept passes and make key tackles has played a key role in Italy’s recent success.

In an interview with Italian newspaper Tuttosport, former Swiss defender Philippe Senderos shared his thoughts on the Italian centre-back. He said:

“Calafiori has improved a lot since last year with Basel. He now carries the ball forward with the confidence of a veteran, even though he is making his first appearance for the national team.”

Riccardo Calafiori’s absence certainly creates a gap in Italy’s defensive strategy. While Gianluca Mancini is a capable substitute, he brings a different set of skills to the team. The question remains: can Italy adapt to this change smoothly, especially against a strong Swiss offensive?

Switzerland have a unique opportunity to take advantage of Calafiori’s suspension. They could aim to exploit any discomfort or inconsistency caused by Mancini stepping into Calafiori’s role. Switzerland could convert goals and threaten the Italian defense by quickly establishing themselves in the middle.

Bastoni and Calafiori complement each other in their roles, but Bastoni will feature alongside Mancini for the first time at Euro 2024 and in the cup match against Switzerland. Switzerland could benefit from a new combination with their front three.

Italy could have planned their approach around Calafiori’s attacking ability. His absence forces them to adjust their tactics at short notice, potentially leading to confusion or delays.

When asked what the Azzurri should fear regarding Switzerland, Senderos stated: “The way they play makes us try to dominate things like in the match against Germany. Tactically, we are all very solid in all departments.” With this in mind, Switzerland can effectively penetrate defenses and look to score early goals to take advantage early in the match.

While Calafiori’s suspension is undoubtedly an advantage for Switzerland, it is not a guaranteed path to victory. The remaining Italian players have the experience to adapt, and their real test will be their ability to overcome this obstacle and successfully execute their game plan. This battle promises to be fierce and more strategic.
