Man accused in death of Tulane police officer sentenced to life in prison

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The man convicted of killing a Tulane police officer in 2021 was sentenced to life in prison on Friday, June 28.

John Shallerhorn was charged with shooting Martinus Mitchum before a basketball game at George Washington Carver High School.

On February 26, 2021, Mitchum was acting as security and attempted to prevent an altercation involving Shallerhorn, who refused to wear a mask upon entering the gym and was denied entry.

Previous reports indicate that when Mitchum tried to de-escalate the situation, Shallerhorn pulled out a gun and shot him.

He was taken to hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Shallerhorn’s trial began on April 3 on first-degree murder charges.

Additionally, Shallerhorn was also convicted of armed robbery.
