A Texas man pleaded guilty Friday to assaulting officers during the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Columbia announced in a news release.

Kyle Douglas McMahan, 42, of Watauga, pleaded guilty to assaulting, resisting or obstructing certain officers, a felony. He will be sentenced on Sept. 10, 2024.

According to court documents, McMahan was among a group of rioters that broke police lines and moved toward the U.S. Capitol building.

As U.S. Capitol Police tried to keep the rioters away from the building, McMahan shoved an officer, according to the release.

After entering the building, he headed toward another police cordon, followed by residents, court documents say. At the police cordon, the defendant grabbed one of the officers by the hand. He remained at the barrier as a group of residents tried to overwhelm the officers guarding the entrance.

As officers formed a line around the rioters inside the building’s rotunda, McMahan grabbed one officer by the arm as he tried to throw another rioter out.

According to court documents, McMahan told the officer, “Don’t touch him (expletive).”

He also pushed an officer as a line of police began to lead occupants out of the building. McMahan then pulled another officer away from the occupants as he attempted to enter the building further. When the officer tried to stop McMahan by putting his hand on him, McMahan slapped his hand away, according to the release.

McMahan left the building but remained outside as police continued to clear the rioters, the release said.

He was arrested on December 6, 2023, in Texas.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, in the 41 months since Jan. 6, 2021, more than 1,450 people have been charged in nearly all 50 states with crimes related to the events at the Capitol on Jan. 6, including more than 500 people charged with assaulting an officer.

The investigation is ongoing.
