A policeman was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a terrible accident in which a man was detained

A police officer was taken to hospital with serious injuries after he was hit by a van travelling off a motorbike on a busy Manchester street.

The accident happened on Ashton Old Road, near the junction with Alan Turing Way, at around 9am today (Friday). Greater Manchester Police said emergency services attended the crash after a police motorcycle collided with a van.

The officer riding the bike was taken from the scene to hospital, and police cordoned off the road. They suffered “serious injuries.”

The driver of the van – a 60-year-old man – was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was detained for questioning.

Several police vehicles were photographed in the cordon as the road from Pottery Lane and Stainforth Street was taped off. Ashton Old Road reopened at around 10.30am.

In a statement, a GMP spokesman said: “Emergency services are responding to a serious road accident involving a police vehicle and a van on Ashton Old Road. The driver of the police motorcycle suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

“Alan Turing Way has been closed while the incident is resolved by emergency services. The driver of the van, a 60-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

“He has been arrested”.
