Q1 2024: 2% reduction in the number of migrants

In the first quarter of 2024, 103,515 non-EU nationals were ordered to leave an EU country and 30,570 returned to another country following an order to leave.

Compared to the same quarter of 2023, the number of non-EU citizens ordered to leave the country fell by 7%, while the number of people returning to another country increased by 11%.

Compared to the previous quarter (Q4 2023), the number of departure orders decreased by 2%, while the number of returns increased by 6%.

The majority (85%) of those returned in the first quarter of 2024 following an order to leave the country were returned to non-EU countries.

Among non-EU citizens ordered to leave the territory of an EU country during this period, Algerian and Moroccan nationals had the largest share of the total, each with 7%, followed by Turks (6%), and Syrians and Georgians (each with 5%). Among those sent back to another country, the majority were citizens of Georgia (9%), followed by Albania and Turkey (each with 6%), and Colombia, Morocco, Algeria and Syria (each with 4%).

In terms of national data, the highest number of third-country nationals ordered to leave the territory of an EU Member State was recorded in France (34,190), Germany (15,400) and Belgium (6,965).

The most people were sent to another country in France (4,205), Germany (3,950) and Sweden (3,135).
