New York Times Files Lawsuit Over Similarity of Popular Games

It was one of the great comforts of isolation, but now Wordle is embroiled in a legal dispute with a game of a similar name.

Guardian the newspaper reports that Wordle’s owner, New York Timesfiled a lawsuit against Kory McDonald, creator of Worldle, a challenge that involved guessing a location based on Google street photos.

NYT claims this is causing confusion among subscribers due to the similarity in appearance and title of the two games. However, McDonald told the BBC that they are very different: “Wordle is about words, Worldle is about the world, Flaggle is about flags.”

Guardian cites the United States Patent and Trademark Office, which states: “Trademarks need not be identical to be confused with like.”

Wordle – a deceptively simple challenge of six attempts to guess a five-letter word, with a new puzzle every day – was developed in 2021 by Josh Wardle to keep his partner entertained during the long months of isolation. It was bought by New York Times in 2022 for a reported seven-figure sum.
