Liverpool’s Anthony Gordon move ‘collapses’ amid refusal to agree swap deal

Liverpool have pulled out of a deal to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United because they did not want to send Jarell Quansah to them as part of the deal, according to a report.

Newcastle need to sell players to comply with Premier League rules on profits and sustainability. The deadline for the 2023-2024 financial period is June 30, although this is not considered to be a hard deadline and transactions executed on subsequent days may still fall into this time frame.

Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak have both been heavily linked with a move away as the Magpies seek out much-needed funds to avoid penalties, and now Gordon has been released.

The Daily mail It is reported that Newcastle held talks with Liverpool this week over the sale of Gordon and were ready to give the winger the green light to move to Anfield.

The deal fell through when Newcastle approached Quansah to try to make the move complete, but the Reds were reluctant to lose the young centre-back and pulled out of the talks.

Quansah, who turned 21 in January, has had a brilliant breakthrough season for Liverpool, making 33 appearances last season. He was named in England’s provisional squad for Euro 2024, but did not make the final.

While Liverpool have not made another offer for Gordon without including Quansah, talks could still resume at the weekend.

Gordon is also attracting interest from Paris Saint-Germain, who are looking for a replacement for Kylian Mbappe, who is moving to Real Madrid.

If the deal with Liverpool goes through this week, Gordon would undergo a medical in Germany, close to England’s training base for Euro 2024. The Three Lions will face Slovakia in the round of 16 on Sunday and there are growing calls that the 23-year-old should start playing.

Gordon signed for Newcastle from Liverpool rivals Everton in January 2023 for £45 million. After a slow start on Tyneside, he became a fan favorite and one of the best players in their squad.
