Wareham firefighters battle diesel fire on Tobey Road – New Bedford guide

“On Friday, June 28, at approximately 10:50 a.m., Engine 5 and its on-duty crew and C-2 (Deputy Chief Haskell) responded to Tobey Road in reference to a leak of over 100 gallons of diesel fuel.

Commander Haskell recognized that the crew on duty would be busy for an extended period of time and ordered the duty and duty personnel to be called to work at the station.

On-duty crews then responded to another emergency call on Patterson Brook Road at 11:40 a.m. While on scene, a call was received regarding a vehicle fire in a garage on Wareham Lake Shore Drive at 11:46 a.m.

An Onset FD engine that had just responded to the call immediately arrived on scene and reported that the detached garage was heavily involved in fire. Onset’s crew used the deck gun and tank water to begin suppressing the heavy fire they encountered. Wareham Fire Chief John Kelley and WFD Engine 1 arrived, Chief Kelley took over and the Engine 1 crew worked on the fire attack.

The fire was extinguished within approximately 20 minutes, but the heavily damaged building required extensive renovation. It appears that a vehicle in the garage caught fire and then spread to the structure. There were no injuries.

Assisting the two engines on scene were C-3 (Assistant Chief Mark Rogers), WFD Rescue 1 and Onset Fire C-2 (Assistant Chief Howard Andersen), as well as Wareham Police and EMS. A second Onset Engine was brought to Station 1 to provide coverage.

The day continued to be filled with many other incident responses.” – Wareham Fire Department
