Low temperatures but little natural snowfall in Australia

Winter has started slowly in Australia and New Zealand, but the situation is slowly improving. NEW

Ski resorts in Australia opened in early June, but the offer of ski sports was very limited.

Now temperatures have dropped, making snowmaking possible, and resorts have been able to open up more terrain.

Mount Hotham Victoria recorded its lowest temperature in six years at -8.3°C

New South Wales, headquarters Fading AND Thredbo Ski resorts recorded the lowest temperature in six years, reaching -3.8°C.

Snowmaking is done on an industrial scale.

There is some forecast for natural snow, but not enough for resorts to fully open.

At Perisher, about 20% of the slopes are open, but at most other resorts only 5-10% of the terrain is suitable for skiing and snowboarding.

New Zealand was also cold and again saw little natural snowfall.

Hutt Mountain has some of the best conditions so far after an overall poor start.

Cardrona has about 25% of the slopes open.

Koronet Peak AND Unusually are open, but skiing is limited.

Triple cone Opened this weekend.

There are some signs of more unsettled weather and potentially light to moderate snowfall later in the week.

The situation is different in South America, where, as we have already reported, winter got off to a great start.
