  • Arizona State Police Officer Josh Briese and Alicen Apkaw were killed by gunfire Saturday morning, June 1.

  • Briese’s death in the line of duty follows that of his father, Dave Briese, who also died on the job 18 years ago.

  • There were six victims in total, including another unnamed officer who is currently in stable condition.

An Arizona police officer was killed in the line of duty on Saturday, June 1, nearly two decades after his father was also killed in the line of duty.

Gila River Police Officer Josh Briese, 24, died after responding to a call alerting officers to a “large crowd disturbance” during which “multiple shots were fired,” the Gila River Police Department said in a Facebook post. “Two GRPD officers were struck by gunfire, as were four people at the scene.”

All victims were transported to local hospitals, but Officer Briese died from his injuries. “The condition of the second injured officer is serious but stable,” we read in a message on Facebook. Alicen Apkaw, 23, also died from her injuries, her workplace, Gila River Resorts & Casinos, confirms to PEOPLE.

GRPD and the FBI are conducting a joint investigation; two people involved in the shooting are in FBI custody, according to the bureau’s website. Additionally, the Gila River Indian Community Council announced a suspension of all dances following the fatal shooting, according to the organization’s Facebook page.

Officer Joshua Briese

Briese had served in the armed forces for less than a year and was still participating in field training at the time of his death. Before joining GRPD, he worked for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

“Whenever you hear of a police officer dying in the line of duty, no matter the circumstances, it’s very tragic,” said Joe Clure, executive director of the Arizona Police Association, according to Arizona Family.

Officer Briese was the son of Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Dave Briese, who also died in the line of duty. Dave died in a car accident while responding to the scene on November 3, 2006 in Montana, according to Arizona’s family.

Captain Kent O’Donnell of the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office in Billings, Mont. told the outlet that Briese really wanted to “honor his father” and “very much wanted” to join law enforcement.

“I actually tried to talk him out of it a few times,” O’Donnell said. “He wanted to be a cop and he just wanted to make his dad proud.”

“He’s an amazing young man. It’s a shame I won’t get to see him grow up because he had a very bright future ahead of him. And whatever he put his mind to, he did,” he said.

O’Donnell also added that he is trying to get Josh’s body back to his home state of Montana so it can be buried next to his father.

“We know they are together and they are probably driving around the sky together, patrolling the area. The fact that they are together again makes us smile,” he said.
