Fernando Batista suspended for one match and will not coach Venezuela against Jamaica

Venezuela coach Fernando Batista has been suspended by CONMEBOL for one match and will miss the final Copa America group stage match against Jamaica.

Batista, 53, was disciplined by tournament organizers for delaying his team from taking the field during Wednesday’s 1-0 victory over Mexico at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

The Venezuelan Football Federation was also fined $15,000 for the violation.

He joins Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni and Chile’s Ricardo Gareca, who were both booked for the same offence at this year’s tournament.

Assistant coach Leandro Cufre will replace Batista on the bench for Sunday’s game at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas.

Venezuela is top of Group C and has already qualified for the quarter-finals.

They could win the group if they pick up a point against the already eliminated Jamaicans and potentially avoid Argentina in the quarter-finals.

Defending champions Argentina can secure top spot in Group A if they pick up a point against Peru in Miami on Saturday.
