Off-duty New York Police Department officer among four dead after SUV crashes into Long Island beauty salon

An off-duty New York Police Department nail technician was one of four people killed Friday when an SUV crashed into a Long Island nail salon.

Emilia Rennhack was an officer with the 102nd Precinct in Queens. An NYPD spokesman confirmed her death Saturday.

The New York Police Benevolent Association said it was “heartbroken” over Rennhack’s death.

“Please join us in praying for her family, friends and colleagues,” the association wrote in a Facebook post.

Customers and employees were at Hawaii Nail & Spa on Grand Boulevard in Deer Park when a Chevy Traverse struck the windshield, Suffolk County police said.

A witness told NBC New York that the SUV drove through the front of the showroom and almost went through the back of the store. All of the people killed or injured were in the showroom at the time, Lt. Kevin Heissenbuttel said.

The driver, Steven Schwally, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, police said Saturday. Authorities say he was driving a Chevrolet Traverse southbound at a high rate of speed through a parking lot when he crossed Grand Boulevard and continued driving through the nail salon parking lot before hitting the window.

A man and three women, including Rennhack, died at the scene. Nine others were injured. The remaining victims were not identified by officials.

One witness said the SUV appeared to be speeding through a parking lot across the street before it crashed, NBC New York reported. The witness said the driver “appeared to be in a hurry” and tried to avoid another vehicle as it drove into the building.

According to the Associated Press, another witness reported hearing a car speeding off followed by a “crashing sound.”
