(Nikos Makris/Intime News)

Two new fires broke out near the Greek capital on Saturday afternoon, with firefighters rushing to put them out as strong winds fanned the flames.

The first fire occurred in the Katsimidi area, on Mount Parnitha, located on the northwestern outskirts of Athens. Authorities are sending an emergency message to local residents to keep them alert in case they need to evacuate.

Sixty firefighters, foot crews and 15 vehicles are on scene, supported by five helicopters and two fire trucks. Several volunteers and hiking teams are also helping with the effort.

To facilitate the work of the fire brigade and protect the public, police diverted traffic to Malakasa and Mercuriou Road, Ippokratous and Tyrtaiou, Tatoiou and Chlois, and Varybobi Bridge.

In Aspropyrgos in western Attica, fire burned low grassland, garbage and dry vegetation, the fire brigade said.

Thirty firefighters, one foot patrol and two vehicles, as well as one helicopter are on site.

At 14:30, an emergency message 112 was sent, ordering the residents of New Zoa to evacuate towards Aspropyrgos. Police directed cars at the intersection of NATO and Aghia Sofia streets.
