OpenAI strikes multi-year content deal with Time magazine amid lawsuit

OpenAI, the company behind the renowned chatbot ChatGPT, has signed a multi-year content supply deal with Time magazine. Thanks to this collaboration, OpenAI will be able to train its advanced artificial intelligence models using Time magazine’s prestigious journalistic content spanning over a century.

It is worth noting that the agreement grants OpenAI access to Time magazine’s extensive archive and equips it with cutting-edge artificial intelligence tools. It even offers the publishing company potentially significant financial compensation.

As OpenAI and its partner Microsoft pursue strategic expansion, they face new legal challenges. The Center for Investigative Journalism (CIR) monitored both corporations, as evidenced by a recent lawsuit, filed against them.

CIR is a non-profit organization known for its merger with Mother Jones. It is also responsible for the productions that take place on the news website Reveal,

The lawsuit, filed in New York on or around June 27, accuses OpenAI of using copyrighted CIR materials without permission or compensation to train its AI models.

CIR CEO Monica Bauerlein has expressed serious concerns about the implications of using copyrighted news content to train artificial intelligence, calling it “extremely dangerous.”

She emphasized the existential threat this practice poses to traditional journalism. Bauerlein believes that the longevity of CIR’s work depends on whether readers find value in its content and choose to support it.

She warned that if AI-generated summaries replace direct contact with original news sources, the crucial relationship between readers and media outlets like Mother Jones and Reveal could be jeopardized.

She stated that the company continues to operate because users find its results valuable and support them. However, these users may transfer their interest in the company’s work to the AI ​​tool, which could render the company worthless.

Ongoing Litigation and Partnership

Meanwhile, CIR’s lawsuit became part of a broader wave of legal action against both sides by major news organizations.

The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, The New York Daily News and Denver Post have it all filed similar lawsuits. They claimed that both companies were using their copyrighted content to train AI models.
