Bullet Brawl June 29, 2024: 13-year-old Erdogmus becomes the first junior to win Bullet Brawl

After advancing to a knockout finish at the ChessKid Youth Championship earlier in the day, 13-year-old GM-elect Yagiz Erdogmus landed another throwback headline Fight with bullets victory on Saturday. With 220 points, Erdogmus finished the competition well ahead of second-place GM Oleksandr Bortnyk (190) and Canadian GM Eric Hansen (184), as well as 107 other decorated players.

With this result, Erdogmus became the first IM and junior competitor to win the event and joined an exclusive list that includes eight exceptional female winners. IM Meri Arabidze won the best female prize of $100 and Cesar Frank Talledo Lagos won the community event.

The next Bullet Brawl will start on Saturday, July 6, 2024, 12:00 PM Eastern Time/6:00 PM Central European Time.

While most 13-year-olds were enjoying a weekend off from school, Erdogmus was busy defeating many of the world’s best chess players in the latest edition of Bullet Brawl. In a field full of GMs like Tuan Minh Le, Matthias Bluebaum, Sam Sevian, and Jose Martinez, Erdogmus’ performance is a reminder that age plays second fiddle to talent when it comes to chess skills.

There must be something in the water!? Erdogmus, pictured with 14-year-old IM Andy Woodward, is part of a generation of champions bred younger and younger. Photo: Patricia Claros Aguilar.

The victory over Le marked an ideal start for Erdogmus, who confirmed this by scoring 4/6 against GM in his first 10 games in Arena. The Turkish sensation became a real contender when he defeated IM Renato Terry and Martinez in 25 and 22 moves respectively.

To consolidate his position at the top, Erdogmus combined two unbeaten streaks of 21 games, the first of which included six figures. It is worth noting that one of them was an 18-stroke victory over former junior world champion GM Pablo Zarnicki.

A snapshot of the period when Erdogmus came to the lead.

Bortnyk, who was the main contender for the top spot, kept in touch with the leader by broadcasting the match on Twitch, but only managed to win 1/4 against Erdogmus, with most of their games degenerating into chaos and ending in a fight for time.

Bortnyk Stills maintains a +4 advantage over Erdogmus, but the gap is closing.

Erdogmus’ Super Saturday caught the attention of longtime world number one GM Magnus Carlsen, who challenged him to a blitz fight at the conclusion of the event. Although the result definitely favored Carlsen (12.5-3.5), Erdogmus managed to score a few victories.

Erdogmus, who boasts a FIDE rating of 2569, is the 12th highest rated player under 18 in the world and the fifth highest rated player from Turkiye. Although GM Hikaru Nakamura and Daniel Naroditsky were not involved in the brawl this week, they will undoubtedly pay attention to the emerging Turkiye prodigy.

The last winner of Bullet Brawl was crowned for the first time in January. Erdogmus’ victory will be added to the leaderboard soon.
