Author: Solomon Gumah, GNA

Tamale, June 29, GNA – The student wing of the Assemblies of God Church, Sanctuary of Wind and Fire in collaboration with Total Life Enhancement Centre-Ghana (TOLEC-GH) has launched a campaign on substance abuse in selected post-secondary institutions in Tamale.

The campaign, run in partnership with the Narcotics Control Commission, aims to raise awareness among students about the dangers of drug abuse and social media addiction.

Its theme is: “Combating the Menace of Drug Abuse and Social Media Addiction: A Path to Achieving Academic Excellence.”

The first phase of the campaign will benefit four second-cycle institutions in Tamale, including Northern School of Business Senior Secondary School, Tamale Islamic Science SHS, Saint Charles Minor Seminary SHS and Tamale Girls’ SHS.

Peter Amadu Mintir, Executive Director of TOLEC-GH, while addressing students of the Northern School of Business SHS, Tamale as part of the campaign, said the campaign aims to raise greater awareness among students on the dangers of drug abuse and the negative impact of drugs and excessive use of social media.

He said that under the campaign, students will be engaged through a series of educational sessions to equip them with knowledge and strategies to make healthier choices and lead more balanced lives.

He said the campaign also builds on this year’s observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and advised students to prioritize their education by avoiding drugs and alcohol as well as excessive use of social media to pursue their dreams.

Dr. Sheba Kunfah, leader of the Wind and Fire Sanctuary Student Welfare Ministry, instructed students on various subtle distractions that can distract them from their education and ultimately ruin their future.

She advised them to try to avoid distractions and focus on their goals and aspirations to become responsible citizens and contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.

Mr Musah Mubarick, an education officer at the northern regional office of the Narcotics Control Commission, said the fight against drug abuse requires equal support from the government and non-governmental organisations.

He appealed to business entities, non-governmental organizations and private individuals to join the fight against drug addiction among young people.

Students praised TOLEC-GH and partners for initiating the campaign.
