13-year-old boy dies after being shot by Utica police officer during fight

Utica, NY — A 13-year-old boy was fatally shot by a Utica police officer Friday night after fleeing from police who arrested him, authorities said.

The boy was rushed to Wynn Hospital in Utica, but died there, Utica police said in a news release Saturday morning.

The shooting happened around 10:18 p.m. when police arrested two juveniles in the 900 block of Shaw Street, police said. One of the juveniles, a 13-year-old boy, fled from officers, police said.

As he ran away, the boy displayed what appeared to be a handgun, police said. A police officer shot the boy as he struggled with officers on the ground.

A video posted to Facebook around midnight by a person living in Utica shows a police officer chasing a boy down a dark street.

A woman watching or filming can be heard yelling, “Watch out, watch out, yo, watch out. You’re on camera.”

The police officer tackles the boy to the ground and hits him at least once while two other police officers appear in the video. Two police officers struggle with the boy on the ground and a third police officer appears.

It was then that a gunshot was heard.

The woman can be heard screaming, “Oh my God, he just shot her.” Other people can be heard screaming.

The fight between the police and the boy lasted 5 seconds before the gunshot was heard.

The police statement included this statement: “Our thoughts are with our officers involved and the family of the deceased juvenile. »

Police will hold a news conference at 10 a.m. at Utica City Hall.
