Nico Williams performed well for Spain at Euro 2024

Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams is one player who has attracted significant interest from the Premier League.

The Telegraph revealed in April that following an impressive La Liga season for the 21-year-old, Tottenham are now “among” the Premier League clubs keeping a close eye on the player in the summer.

Chelsea are among the teams to have expressed serious interest in Williams recently, with the Spaniard standing out in an impressive start to the national team’s run ahead of Euro 2024.

Reports suggested Chelsea were “looking at” Williams but may have had to secure some transfer fees before a bid was made. (The Telegraph)

A week ago, Fabrizio Romano cryptically revealed on his YouTube channel that “major English clubs have made contact with people close to Nico Williams,” explaining that “many clubs have taken steps to understand Nico Williams’ situation.”

Williams appears to be in no rush to leave

Late in the evening on Thursday (27.06.24) in an interview for Radio Gaceta, provided by Fabrica RomanoNico Williams himself stated: “I already said Bilbao is my home” when asked about the future.

Bilbao have an interesting club policy whereby only players from the Basque region can represent the club, which often results in greater player loyalty and high fees that lure players away from the Spanish team.

Williams then added: “I just recently renewed my contract and I’m very happy here.”

Stimulates opinion on the Internet

This is likely to put an end to any chances of Williams being hired this summer after the club made it clear they were more than happy to keep him at Athletic Bilbao next season.

Watching Williams this summer made me even more eager for Tottenham to sign the player, but as I mentioned earlier, given the Bilbao club’s policies and the typically high transfer fees for stars like Laporte and Griezmann, it was clear from the start that he would be it’s a tough deal.

The only positive to come out of this statement is perhaps the fact that it reduces the chances of other Premier League teams signing the young winger, who has the potential to become a top player in the near future.
