Referee Michael Oliver stopped the game after hearing a deafening boom in the stadium. Lightning then struck near the stadium, forcing Oliver to ask the players to leave the field.

Play was suspended for nearly 25 minutes, with both teams only emerging once weather conditions improved and UEFA deemed it safe to resume play.

When a player from Denmark lost his leg due to lightning

The scenes in Dortmund recalled the sad story of Jonathan Richter, who was struck by lightning in 2009. Ritcher, who played as a midfielder for FC Nordsjælland, had a devastating experience during a training match against Hvidovre.

As a result of the incident, Ritcher suffered a cardiac arrest and doctors were forced to place him in a coma to save his life. The Guardian reports that he was placed in a medically induced coma for 10 days.

Six weeks later, the lower part of his left leg was amputated, leaving the midfielder disabled.

According to Transfermarkt, the current Denmark coach, Kasper Hjulmand, was one of Nordsjælland’s coaches at the time.
