Man Charged in Greenbrier, TN Officer-Involved Shooting

GREENBRIER, Tenn. (WKRN) — Authorities are trying to locate a man after a shooting Friday night that involved a Greenbrier police officer.

At the request of 19th Judicial District Attorney General Robert Nash, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) announced that its special agents are investigating the incident on Friday, June 28, which, according to preliminary information, occurred after a vehicle was stopped for a traffic stop in an apartment building. 100 at Candy Lane.

A Greenbrier police officer stopped a Nissan Maxima, but the driver allegedly fled and attempted to hit the officer after the female passenger exited the vehicle. An officer fired at the car, but at the time of writing it is unclear whether the shots hit the car or the driver as efforts are underway to determine the whereabouts of both, according to officials.

The TBI is asking for the public’s help in locating 22-year-old Jalon Devon Smith, who has been charged in connection with Friday’s shooting.

Authorities said Smith was driving a blue 2009 Nissan Maxima with Tennessee tag 550-BMRL at the time of the incident.

“TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading up to the shooting, including gathering evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, the investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for further review and consideration,” the office said in a statement Saturday, June 29. “TBI serves solely as a fact-finder in its cases and does not determine whether the officer’s actions were justified in these types of cases. That decision rests with the District Attorney General, who will request TBI involvement.”

No additional details were released about the incident, including the identity of the officer involved.
