12-year-old recovers bike, investigators still searching for suspected thief

DENVER (KDVR) – A 12-year-old boy has recovered a stolen bike, and officers are still searching for a suspect.

On June 19, boy Alex locked his bike outside the Walmart on Coalmine Avenue. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, he went inside to buy fishing equipment.

Meanwhile, the sheriff’s office said the suspect saw the bike, went into the store and stole bolt cutters, then cut the lock and stole Alex’s bike.

A little over a week later, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office recovered the bike and returned it to Alex, but the suspect has still not been caught.

“We are happy to report that we have recovered the bike in perfect condition! Alex was thrilled when Detectives Clarkson and Gist returned the bike to him,” the sheriff’s office said in a post on X.

The suspected thief is described as a white male. At the time of the theft, he was wearing a blue T-shirt, blue or black shorts, white sneakers with black short socks and a black and white baseball cap.

“Although we have recovered the bicycle, we are still working to identify the thief based on the low-quality photos we have,” the sheriff’s office said.

Anyone who recognizes the suspect or has any knowledge of the case is asked to call the tip line at 303-271-5612. People providing information can remain anonymous.
