Euro 2024: Germany vs. Denmark delayed due to lightning

DORTMUND, Germany – Germany’s Euro 2024 round of 16 clash with Denmark in Dortmund on Saturday was suspended for about 22 minutes because of a storm that sent players being thrown off the field by a lightning strike.

English referee Michael Oliver stopped play in the 35th minute of Borussia Dortmund’s match at Signal Iduna Park after loud thunder and lightning preceded a downpour.

The players returned to the pitch and resumed play after a short warm-up.

At the time of suspension, the match was tied 0-0. German defender Nico Schlotterbeck had a goal disallowed in the fourth minute after an offense by teammate Joshua Kimmich.

Germany won 2-0 and advanced to the quarter-finals, and the match was not delayed any further.
