Liverpool have rejected an offer to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United after the Magpies asked to include Jarell Quansah in the deal.

Following a sensational exchange of words between the two Premier League rivals on Saturday, it was widely reported that Newcastle had offered their star winger to the Merseyside club.

Newcastle approached Liverpool this week with a bid to sign former Everton star Gordon, which would see centre-back Quansah move to St James’ Park in the opposite direction.

However, the Reds are not interested in letting the young defender leave their squad. Quansah established himself as a key member of the first-team squad last season, earning a place in England’s provisional Euro 2024 squad before failing to qualify for the final.

Gordon, who came through Everton’s youth academy after joining the club as an 11-year-old, left Goodison Park in January 2023.

He had an outstanding game for Newcastle in the 2023-24 season, scoring 12 goals and providing 11 assists.

Although Liverpool’s recruitment team admire him, the club are not willing to sacrifice one of their young stars in Quansah to complete a deal.

Newcastle’s willingness to sell one of their key players comes as the club continues its efforts to comply with the Prime Minister’s rules on profit and sustainability – as the club approaches its accounts deadline on Sunday evening.

Liverpool are still interested in signing Gordon, with The Guardian reporting there is still a chance of another offer coming this weekend.

Gordon is currently in England’s Euro 2024 squad and is bidding for a role in the team when the Three Lions face Slovakia in their last 16 match on Sunday evening.

Newcastle have also made contact with Chelsea over a move for star striker Alexander Isak, with the Blues also keen to capitalise on Tyneside’s financial situation.

Chelsea were considering a bid worth over £100m for the Sweden international, but that interest has reportedly waned and Newcastle are determined to keep the 24-year-old.
