The first rule of golf Twitter is: don’t talk about golf Twitterbut the second rule is even more important.

NO wheneverunder everyone circumstances, take swing advice from golf Twitter.

Sauce Gardner clearly has a lot to learn. The 23-year-old New York Jets linebacker recently burst onto the golf internet, but his star has already risen quickly. Gardner took up golf during a rare slump in the NFL offseason, and though he’s only been playing for two weeks, it’s clear to even the most passive observer of his social media that he’s bitten by the golf bug. Badly.

“This drive just went 240+ and straight but looks like I’m hitting an iron (form) (sic) and not a driver,” Sauce tweeted earlier this week while searching the internet for fixes to his golf swing. “Drop the tips below.”

The post quickly went viral and sparked reactions from half of the golf industry hoping for a piece of the Jets’ titular young star. Soon, TaylorMade and the PGA of America responded with tips on Gardner’s club setup and form, and Gardner’s game improved in kind, including video evidence of his first birdie.

Since then, Gardner’s Twitter account has become ground zero for a guy with a lot of money and a newfound obsession with golf. He’s revealed to the public that he’s building an indoor golf simulator in his home to play during football season, accepted invitations from a number of private clubs in the New York metro area, and even scored an invitation from Bryson DeChambeau to meet up for a personal golf lesson. On Friday morning, he greeted his Twitter followers by sharing a dream he had the night before.

“I had a dream that I hit a hole-in-one on a par 5,” he wrote. “I woke up and told myself to keep dreaming.”

In his first 18-hole round, Sauce shot 96 at Forrest Hill Field Club, a private course in Bloomfield, N.J. After that, Gardner shared another batch of swing photos — this time from Scottie Scheffler — asking for advice on how to better reflect the world’s No. 1 player at the top of his backswing. After a few hours of responses, he responded again.

“I love golf on Twitter,” Gardner said.

Sauce Gardner’s love affair with golf has developed rapidly and seriously – so quickly and seriously that even the PGA Tour’s official social media channels joined in on the fun of this year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic, asking players for feedback on his swing.

“Sauce is just getting started,” Rickie Fowler said with a smile at a news conference Friday. “I like the possibilities.”

It appears the feeling is mutual.
