The Euro 2024 round of 16 match between Germany and Denmark was interrupted due to a storm over the Borussia Dortmund stadium.

In the 35th minute of the match, and shortly after referee Michael Oliver stopped play, the sound of thunder could be heard in the background.

Dramatic looking lightning bolts could be seen over Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund, lighting up the night sky.

After several minutes on the bench, Oliver stopped the game and ordered the teams back to the locker rooms.

UEFA said in a statement: ‘Due to unfavorable weather conditions (storms and heavy rain) in Dortmund, a decision was made to suspend the UEFA EURO 2024 round of 16 match between Germany and Denmark.

“UEFA will announce its decision on the resumption of the match in due course.”

Heavy rain fell at the Signal Iduna Park stadium, with drops falling through a leaky roof.

However, the weather did not spoil the evening for some Danish fans, who were seen dancing with one of the two waterfalls falling onto the seats.

Other fans, however, took cover as they were soaked by the downpour.

During the break, stadium workers were seen sweeping up water on the side of the pitch.

Once the lightning stopped and the rain stopped, the players were led onto the field to enthusiastic applause from the crowd.

After a five-minute warm-up, play resumed – approximately 16 minutes after the players were asked to leave the pitch.

Before the break, the Germans thought they had taken an early lead when Nico Schlotterbeck headed the ball into the net.

However, the goal was disallowed as Joshua Kimmich was penalised for blocking a Danish defender who was tracking the goalscorer.

Whoever wins will face the winner of tomorrow’s match between Spain and Georgia, which will take place on July 5 in Stuttgart.
