Authorities say residents have been displaced and a firefighter injured after a house fire prompted the response of more than a dozen fire departments near Woodstock.

The Woodstock Fire District responded at approximately 5:42 p.m. Saturday to 14600 Perkins Road in unincorporated Woodstock for a report of a residential structure fire.

According to Alex Vuch, communications specialist with the Woodstock Fire District, firefighters found a large amount of flames coming from the garage adjacent to the two-story residence.

Vucha said working smoke detectors alerted two residents to the developing fire.

The residents escaped unharmed before the fire department arrived.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated due to the complexity of the incident and an outside heat index of nearly 90 degrees.

Aggressive actions inside and out prevented the fire from spreading further into the house, Vucha said.

The fire was declared under control within 35 minutes.

The review and investigation lasted another 90 minutes. During the incident, Woodstock was assisted by 14 fire brigades.

Vucha said the house is considered unoccupied until renovations are carried out.

The firefighter was assessed at the scene for heat exhaustion but did not require transport to the hospital.

The American Red Cross is helping three residents find temporary housing.

Vucha said the fire does not appear suspicious, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District.

“Working smoke alarms save lives! Woodstock Fire/Rescue District is participating in a joint effort with the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance to provide free smoke alarms to our community,” Vucha said.

As part of the program, smoke detectors are installed in residents’ homes to help reduce the number of deaths caused by fires.

The detectors are free but must be installed by the Woodstock Fire District.
