Look for a man who was last seen swimming in a suspended pond; Attempts to resume on Monday

The search for a man last seen swimming in a Dayton pond has been temporarily suspended, Dayton Fire District Chief Nick Judge said.

At 7:44 p.m., Dayton police and fire responded to a water rescue call at the Action Sports Center at 1103 Gateway Drive.

“We received a story that this gentleman was trying to swim from one side of the pond to the other when he began to have trouble. Witnesses saw him struggling to keep his head above water and then eventually submerging himself to keep from resurfacing,” the judge said.

The search and rescue team sailed out in boats and began looking for the victim using sonar technology.

“We found several interesting places where divers spent a long time trying to find the victim,” the judge said.

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base crews dived in water that was 35 feet deep and “murky,” Judge said.

The search was temporarily suspended due to nightfall and safety reasons.

The judge said crews had previously participated in a water rescue at this location.

The Dayton Fire Department was assisted at the scene by representatives from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and a diving team from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

The search will continue on Monday morning.

“We will make a decisive decision in the morning, in collaboration with many regional partners and diving personnel, to bring closure to this family as quickly as possible,” Judge said.
