AND A 37-year-old man was in critical but stable condition after a Sunday morning standoff with Ventura County Sheriff’s Office officers that resulted in one of the officers shooting the man, according to a VCSO spokesman.

The man’s name has not yet been released.

The shooting happened shortly after officers responded to a 911 call near Erbes Road and Avenida de los Arboles in Thousand Oaks around 6:50 a.m. June 30.

The sheriff’s office has not yet released details about what led to the shooting; however, VCSO Public Information Officer, Senerey De Los Santos told Acorn that only one deputy was involved in the shooting. A knife was found at the scene, she said via social media.

Thousand Oaks resident London Nordhoff was heading to the store in the Oakbrook Plaza shopping center at the intersection of Erbes and Avenida de los Arboles when the incident occurred.

“When I got to Vons and got out of the car, everyone in the parking lot was looking toward Erbes Road,” Nordhoff said. “They were saying the police were chasing Chewbacca, and they were yelling, ‘Run, Forrest, run.’”

The situation became much more serious when she left the grocery store.

“I was in and out, and now everyone is staring at Arboles,” she said.

She also looked over and saw a man wrapped in some kind of white scarf and holding a white, triangular object.

“It didn’t look like a knife or a gun,” she said. “It looked like those plastic (PVC) pipes, but it was triangular in shape.”

She said it was about the size of a man’s upper torso.

“It looked kind of like the help needed sign you see on the side of the street,” Nordhoff said.

“All of a sudden, there’s a lot of sirens. It was quiet before, just the lights, and then it was, ‘Back up, back up, drop it,'” she said. “They must have told him a few times.”

She then heard what she thought were approximately six shots, separated by a short pause between the first two shots.

Sheriff’s officers at the scene determined the deputy involved did not sustain any physical injuries.

As of noon Sunday, Sheriff’s Office personnel were still investigating the scene.

Acorn will update this story as details emerge.
