Firefighters divert flood water away from homes in Wānaka | Crux – Local news

Firefighters are pumping water from private properties in Wānaka as rain continues to fall.

A large amount of water is collecting on Aubrey Road, a few hundred meters east of the intersection with Anderson Road.

Police are also on site, obstructing traffic.

Firefighters pump flood water from Mount Roy Terrace.

Meanwhile, a large pool of water has formed in a depression on a small side road on Mount Roy Terrace. Two fire engines are stationed there and water is being pumped out onto Aubrey Road.

The water then flows across the road into an empty section where a container belonging to Trident Homes now appears to be flooded.

Queenstown Lakes District Council says it is aware of the problem and has sent contractors to the site.

“Our priority is to work to fully understand the cause and source of the flooding and its impact on residents,” a council spokesman said.

Stormwater management issues persist at the intersection of Aubrey and Anderson streets. The city council announced a year ago that it would solve the problem of water accumulating after rainfall in this place.

Water diverted from Mount Roy Terrace is spilling onto Aubrey Road in Wānaka.

However, the Council believes that today’s issue is unrelated to this.

“At this stage the issue appears to be unrelated to previous periodic flooding at the Anderson Road-Aubrey Road junction and is occurring some distance away from the new roundabout,” the spokesman said.
