Mass., New England Map, Severe Weather Warnings and Advisories for Sunday

Parts of New England faced severe storms on Sunday. This is the second time in a week that summer storms have hit the northeast of the country.

The National Weather Service has placed parts of the region under a severe thunderstorm watch until 7 p.m. ET, and Massachusetts and Rhode Island counties are under severe thunderstorm warnings.

The weather in the region is very variable, with heat and storms throughout the week.

“The northeast will get stuck in a cycle where it will be pleasantly cool for about two days, then it will be hot and humid for two days, and then it will repeat,” AccuWeather senior meteorologist Dave Dombek said Sunday on the forecaster’s website. “In the meantime, during the transition period, some locations will experience showers and thunderstorms and the weather will be extremely severe.”

The cycle should moderate through the Fourth of July holiday, bringing typical summer weather to the region on Thursday.

“At this point, weather conditions appear to be fairly typical for the 4th of July across the Northeast, with some sunshine and hot and fairly humid conditions,” Dombek said. “The extent of afternoon and evening storm activity has not yet been determined at this stage.”

Here are the locations where the NWS has issued severe storm warnings and advisories.

Storm warning and alert

The NWS recommends that people under a storm warning be prepared and ready to act if a warning is issued for their area. Warnings often cover large areas and regions.

Storm warnings cover smaller areas and indicate an immediate threat to life and property. According to the NWS, people in the area where a storm warning has been issued should leave unsuitable buildings and find appropriate shelter.
