Child dies in multi-alarm fire in Bayonne

One child died in an early morning fire at a Bayonne children’s home, according to the Hudson County prosecutor.

The fire at Avenue C and 18th Street started behind a playground. Authorities have not yet confirmed the child’s name, age or gender.

A woman who lives on the first floor of the home told News 12 New Jersey she believes the child who died lived on the second floor. The woman said she went to the hospital and when she returned home she saw smoke and fire. She said she managed to get her two children out of the house.

“I was just trying to do what I had to do and get my son out. I was trying to get up there and help the little girl,” she said.

Details about the cause of the fire and whether anyone else was injured have not yet been released.

The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Bayonne Fire Department are investigating the fire.
