England could face a quarter-final headache as Marc Guehi could be suspended following a yellow card against Slovakia

England are in the middle of their Euro 2024 round of 16 clash with Slovakia and will have to work hard to secure victory, but if they do, they already know that at least one change will be necessary for the next match.

Gareth Southgate has rotated a few players so far during the tournament, but it has mainly been in midfield. However, if England defeat Slovakia and advance, a change in defense will be necessary.

Marc Guehi was shown a yellow card just minutes into the match and, having already been shown a yellow card in the group stage, will now face a one-match ban, effective from the quarter-finals.

Ezri Konsa, Lewis Dunk and Joe Gomez are the alternatives to Guehi, who played alongside John Stones in Gareth Southgate’s side.

Possible further disciplinary problems arose with early yellow cards for midfielders Kobbie Mainoo and Jude Bellingham as the Three Lions found themselves on the wrong side of referee Umut Meler.

Even more significant, however, was the fact that Slovakia took the lead midway through the first half – a return to form that is vital if England are to remain in the tournament after reaching the final three years ago.

Yellow cards are not issued after the end of the quarter-finals, but if the aforementioned midfield pair, or any other previously booked player, receives another yellow card in the last 16 match, they will be suspended for the semi-finals – if England get that far, that is.

Suspensions do not carry over to other competitions in the event of England being eliminated, unless they are issued for separate match-specific carding issues.
