Firefighters continue to work at the scene of a fire that broke out in an industrial estate near Paisley, Renfrewshire.

Emergency services were called to the Enva electronic waste landfill at 9 p.m. on Sunday after residents reported hearing loud explosions.

Ten fire engines attended Linwood Industrial Estate in Elderslie. Five remained at the scene on Monday morning.

A large plume of smoke could be seen rising from the scene north towards Glasgow. There were no reports of any injuries.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service advised residents in the affected area to stay indoors and close windows and doors.

Drivers should close windows and vents and turn off air conditioning.

An eyewitness told BBC Scotland News he initially thought the explosions were people setting off fireworks during Scotland’s match against Hungary at the European Championships.

He added: “But then we looked out the window and saw this huge cloud of smoke rising from Johnstone, Elderslie towards Paisley.

“I went outside, looked around and just saw something clearly on fire.

“What followed was about thirty minutes of almost continuous explosions. It sounded like gunshots or fireworks or something.”

The industrial estate is less than four miles from Glasgow Airport. A spokesman said flights were not affected by smoke from the fire.

The fire broke out at Enva’s electronic waste disposal facility on an industrial estate. An Enva spokesman said the incident was contained and no one was injured.

A spokesman said: “We would like to apologize to local residents and businesses for any inconvenience and would kindly ask them to follow any advice issued by Fire and Rescue Scotland.

We will contact any affected customers as soon as possible to ensure continued service.

“Our general waste recycling facility in Linwood, although unaffected by the fire, will remain closed until the emergency services cordon is removed and operational responsibility for the facility is restored to Enva.”

Burnbrae Road in Linwood remains closed at the Linclive Junction due to a fire.
