Lane violations: 252% increase in lane violation fines compared to previous year | Delhi News

New Delhi: Delhi Traffic Police saw a staggering 252% growth accusations for lane discipline violations in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year.
Statistics reveal that between January and June 2024, traffic police issued tickets to 2,577 people for driving in the wrong lane, a significant increase compared to the 732 tickets issued in 2023.

IGI Airport (572), Mayur Vihar (344), Madhu Vihar (339), Kamla Market (215) and Civil Lines (195) emerged as the top five destinations lane violations. Narela reported 194 violations, ranking sixth. Kotwali (178), Timarpur (164), Kapashera (86) and Kalyanpuri (59) occupied the bottom four spots in the top ten list.
Special Commissioner HGS Dhaliwal said: “To increase safety on the road and reduce traffic jams, more stringent measures were implemented to ensure drivers followed the correct movement on the lanes. The unit intensified supervision and enforcement actions throughout the city, deploying additional staff to monitor traffic flow and identify criminals.”
“By identifying areas where road traffic violations are most common, this study facilitates targeted enforcement actions aimed at improving road safety and ensuring compliance with road traffic rules,” said Special CP K Jagadesan.
The traffic police said they have partnered with various entities, including city authorities and educational institutions, to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining lane driving discipline.
Unsafe lane changes are a common traffic violation that usually occurs on roads with two or more lanes in the same direction, marked with clear dividing lines. In order for a traffic police officer to issue a ticket, they will usually witness a driver changing lanes without taking the proper precautions. This often involves moving into another lane without signaling.
The dangers of constantly changing lanes far outweigh any perceived benefits. “Frequent lane changes are a recipe for disaster. Drivers who weave through traffic have less time to react to unexpected situations in adjacent lanes. The study found that drivers who change lanes frequently are twice as likely to have an accident compared to those who stay in their lanes,” said a senior traffic police officer.
