Utica police identify officer who fatally shot boy; release video of foot chase and shooting

Utica, New York – Utica police on Saturday evening released footage from the body cameras worn by three officers involved in a foot chase that ended when one of them fatally shot a 13-year-old boy.

They also identified the officer who fired the shot as Patrick Husnay, who has been with the department for six years.

Police say the videos show the boy pointing at officers with what turned out to be a replica Glock pellet gun.

The boy killed was Nyah Mway.

He and another boy were arrested on the 900 block of Shaw Street around 10:18 p.m. Friday.

Body camera footage shows one of the officers asking Nyah to raise his hands to see if he had a weapon.

When he did, Nyah suddenly runs down the street. Officers run after him and repeatedly shout at him to “stop reaching.”

Then they shout, “Drop it.”

Another says, “he has a gun.”

Nyah is knocked to the ground after he turns to face the officer and appears to point something at him. As Nyah and the officers lie on the ground, a shot is heard.

The officers move away from the boy. The chase lasted about 15 seconds until the shot was fired.

The officer picks up what looks like a gun from the ground that was lying next to Nyah. He looks at it for a few seconds and says he thinks it’s a .22 caliber pistol.

Police later determined it was a replica Glock pellet gun.

Husnay, the officer who fired the shot, and two others involved in the pursuit — Bryce Patterson and Andrew Citriniti — were placed on paid leave.

Nyah and a second boy, also 13, were detained because they matched descriptions of the robbery suspects, police said in a Saturday evening news release.

The suspects were involved in at least two robberies and were described as “one Asian male and one black male, one on foot and the other on a bicycle,” police said.

Police stopped Nyah and the other boy, who was riding the bicycle, based on that description and because they were in the area of one of the robberies that had occurred at around the same time the previous night.

Police said they were also detained for jaywalking, which is a misdemeanor.

Utica police said they have launched an internal investigation. The state Attorney General’s office has launched its own office, as required by state law.
