In a Facebook post, the IMPD Northwest District reported that on June 20, Abby’s dog was one of three animals in the vehicle. The incident occurred at the Intown Suites hotel on West 85th Street.

The temperature outside that day was 90 degrees. Hotel workers say the animals were in the car for about three hours and were only notified when Abby started honking.

The other two animals in the vehicle were a pit bull and a cat. Police say the pit bull was found with a chain and weight tied to the floorboard. Unfortunately, the dog died before IMPD could attempt to save it.

The cat was rescued from the vehicle, although no update on its condition was provided.

Abby is adopted by IMPD Public Safety Officer Poe, who was on scene during the rescue. Shortly after the PSO event, Poe contacted Indianapolis Animal Care to inquire about adopting Abby.

IMPD arrested Charles Thompson, 53, and Norma Light, 74, in connection with this incident. Thompson received an animal cruelty charge and Light received an animal cruelty charge. Both were booked into the Marion County Jail and their trial will begin in mid-July.
