President Joe BidenThe family used Sunday’s meeting at Camp David to urge him to stay in the race and continue fighting despite his dismal debate performance, and some members criticized the way his staff prepared him for the resumption, according to four people familiar with the discussions.

Biden spent the day in isolation with first lady Jill Biden, his children and grandchildren. It was a previously scheduled trip to the presidential residence in Maryland for a photo session with Annie Leibovitz in connection with the upcoming Democratic National Convention.

But the meeting was also an attempt to find a way to quell the Democratic unrest that exploded on Thursdays efficiency.

Even though his family knew how poorly he fared against Donald Trump, they still believe thatis the best person to defeat the presumptive Republican nominee. They also believe he has the ability to serve another four years as president, according to the people, who were not authorized to speak publicly about internal discussions and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Among the most vocal: Jill Biden and son Hunter, whom the president has long turned to for advice and counsel. They both believe the president shoulddon’t bow when he doess down and they believe he can come back from what they consider to be one poor performance. The family questioned how the staff prepared him for the debate and wondered if they could have done something better, the people said.

BidenThe president’s campaign has spent the days since the debate — during which he spoke hoarsely, paused and at times gave convoluted answers — trying to keep donors and surrogates on board as Democrats increasingly questioned his decision to stay in the race.

At this point in the delegation process, Biden would likely have to resign to select a new candidate. And the people he listens to the most in the world—his wife and son—are telling him to stay.

Before the debate, age 81yearthe old democratic president was a burden to the voters and the prime ministerthe time confrontation seemed to reinforce society’s deep sense of guiltsitting fears in front of what will probably be the biggest audience he will have in the four months until Election Day. CNN reported that more than 51 million people watched the debate.

While the president was huddled with his family, prominent Democrats gathered Sunday to publicly show support for his campaign.

“I don’t think Joe Biden will have a leadership problem over the next four years,” said one close ally, Democratic Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina. Joe Biden should continue his election campaign based on his achievements.
