Why season 6 of Top Boy will not take place

Top Boy spoilers follow.

It was a bittersweet moment for fans in 2022 when news broke that Top Boy would be renewed for its fifth and final season.

The shock was almost as surprising as that of Jamie (Micheal Ward) being shot by Sully, if not quite as devastating given the success of the previous season.

At the time of the announcement, series leads Ashley Walters and Kane Robinson (who play Dushane and Sully, respectively) released a statement paying tribute to fans, saying:

“For those who have followed the journey from the beginning, you will know how much this show means to everyone on our team and we wholeheartedly know how much it means to you.

“These characters have been a part of our lives for over a decade now and without everyone’s support we wouldn’t have been able to get this far.”

They added:

“While Dushane and Sully’s journeys remained at the heart of the series, the new characters that entered the world of Top Boy became a key part of the show’s legacy, representing each new story in a raw and authentic way.

“That being said, and staying true to our original goal, every story must have an ending and so season three will be our finale. A chance to come full circle and end the journey the right way.

“We are very excited about what’s next and thank you for riding with us. We appreciate you. See you soon.”

However, this isn’t the first time fans have had to digest the news that their gripping crime drama Top Boy has been cancelled.

In 2013, Top Boy’s run was cut short by Channel 4, where the show originally aired, after just two seasons.

To the delight of many, it was saved from the scrap heap and picked up by Netflix (following a little encouragement from rapper and super-fan Drake) where it enjoyed three additional seasons.

Given the show’s revival history, many doubted whether this was truly the end of Top Boy, even in the face of the above statement. These skeptics are going to get a reality check when they watch the finale. There is no going back after this epic ending. The question is: why does it end?

Why is Top Boy ending?

The reason is quite simple actually: it seems that the creative minds behind the series wanted to end things their way, successfully.

Speaking about the decision to cancel Top Boy, Walters told Tudum:

“With something as great as this, you want to end on a high note, and that’s what we’re doing. We’re all fighting every day to make sure we give our audience and fans of the show the most amazing ending that we can.”

Sorry everyone, it seems even Drake can’t change their minds this time. At least they promise to go out with a bang!
