District Court Judge Lynn Leibovitz denied prosecutors’ request to set aside the trial date, even though the defense needed additional time to review the agreement during a June 28 hearing.

James Borum, 21, was charged with three counts of armed carjacking, three counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, conspiracy and receiving stolen goods worth $1,000 or more, for his alleged involvement in three incidents that occurred on January 11, 2021, in the 1500 block of 30th Street, NW, and January 12, 2021, in the 4700 and 4300 blocks of Alston Place, NW.

When prosecutors asked to “set aside the trial date,” Judge Leibovitz responded “well, now you’re crazy,” asking to remove the trial date without the parties agreeing to a settlement. She said the prosecutor needed to try the case as quickly as possible.

Borum’s attorney said he needed more time to discuss the settlement offer with him.

The party is scheduled to meet again on July 1.
