Community mourns 6-year-old girl killed in multi-alarm fire at Bayonne home

A 6-year-old girl died in a fire that broke out at a home in Bayonne, according to the Hudson County District Attorney’s Office.

The fire was reported just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday at the two-story home at 438 Avenue C. The prosecutor says firefighters found the girl unconscious while trying to put out the blaze. She has been identified as Saniya Felton. Felton was pronounced dead just after 1 a.m. Monday.

Neighbors told News 12 the girl’s brother tried to escape with her through a window but was unable to get her out.

Officials say four people and three firefighters were treated for minor injuries. The Office of Emergency Management and the American Red Cross are helping seven people displaced by the fire.

The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and Bayonne Fire Department are investigating the fire. Officials say foul play is not suspected.

Neighbors and community members gathered Monday evening for a vigil in the girl’s honor.
