CROOKSTON, Minn. (AP) — A Crookston police officer fatally shot a man during a confrontation at a homeless shelter, the police chief of that northwestern Minnesota city said Monday.

Officers were dispatched to the Care and Share shelter at about 11:45 p.m. Sunday on reports of a fight in progress. They confronted the man “who was acting aggressively toward officers and was not following their verbal commands,” Police Chief Darin Selzer said in a statement.

“Before the officer discharged his department’s firearm and struck the suspect, less-lethal measures were used,” Selzer said. “Officers provided life-saving aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The police chief did not say in the statement whether the man was armed, but added that he would not provide details at this time due to the ongoing investigation.

The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation has taken over the investigation, as is common in law enforcement-involved shootings. The BCA said it would release further information once the initial investigation is complete.
