Tigers issue statement on sexual harassment allegations against broadcaster

(Note: Contains details about sexual harassment.)

Baseball analyst and former Detroit Tigers player Craig Monroe is on an indefinite leave of absence from Bally Sports Detroit after sexual assault allegations surfaced on social media in June. Monroe, who played five seasons with the Tigers, began this season as the network’s lead analyst. He first joined Bally Sports Detroit in 2012, shortly after retiring in 2009 after nine seasons.

According to a statement provided to Awful Announcing, BSD intentionally removed Monroe from the show as of June 9 as a result of the new allegations. The accusations against Monroe included rape and child molestation, the station said.

A woman wrote on social media that Monroe began sexually abusing her when she was 12 — when Monroe was playing in the minor leagues. She alleged that Monroe sexually abused her from childhood into adulthood and forced her into prostitution for Monroe’s teammates, including former Tigers reliever Joel Zumayava.

The woman’s account says she has been in contact with the team and her network of contacts numerous times.

The Tigers joined Bally Sports in a statement Monday. Monroe has not yet publicly addressed the allegations.

“Bally Sports Detroit and the Tigers are aware of the allegations on social media and are taking them seriously,” the joint statement said. “As previously noted, Mr. Monroe has not appeared on the broadcast schedule and will remain so indefinitely. We will have no further comment and any questions should be directed to Mr. Monroe.”
