Cristiano Ronaldo bursts into tears after missing a penalty against Slovenia, leaving his mother distraught in the stands

CRISTIANO RONALDO was left in tears after missing a penalty in extra time amid extraordinary scenes at Euro 2024.

However, there was a surprising turn of events for the Manchester United legend when the match went to penalties.

Ron not only scored a goal, he APOLOGIZED to the Portugal fans, and his team won 3-0 on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

However, in the 105th minute, it all looked completely different when Oblak surged forward to deny Ron’s powerful shot.

The 39-year-old striker initially simply put his head in his hands and continued playing.

But when the first half of the extra half-hour ended a few seconds later, his emotions reached their peak.

His teammates tried to comfort Ron, but tears flowed freely, seemingly uncontrollably.

The Al-Nassr star’s team-mate, Euro 2016 winner Jose Fonte, told the BBC: “He’s an emotional guy – he wants to score more than anything. It’s going to hurt him.”

Meanwhile, as the cameras panned to the stands, his mother also appeared to be in tears.

Ronaldo came into the game after the worst streak of his career – seven international tournament matches without scoring a goal.

With Portugal struggling against Slovenia’s excellent defence, Ron had only a few chances in regulation time to break through the disadvantage.

Then it was time for extra time, in which the referee awarded a penalty kick.

But Ronaldo showed his mental strength when the match went to penalties.

His shot on goal after an unsuccessful attempt hit the opposite corner of the goal.

Instead of celebrating, he folded his arms and made a gesture of humility – a gesture intended to express sympathy for his country’s fans gathered at the Frankfurt Arena.

Portugal then won comfortably on penalties as Slovenia converted a spot-kick.

However, it was a match in which most of the drama came from the emotions of the icon rather than the physical actions of his weaker team.

How Portugal fared at the Euro with Cristiano Ronaldo

CRISTIANO RONALDO is a model of longevity and has had a distinguished international career for over two decades.

Euro 2004

After making his international debut in 2003, Ronaldo made his first Euro appearance in 2004.

Ronaldo made his Euro debut by scoring in a 2-1 defeat to Greece, his first game for Portugal.

He scored his second goal in the semi-final victory over the Netherlands, but Portugal again met Greece in the final, losing 1-0 in a surprising match.

Euro2008

Four years later, Ronaldo became captain of the Portuguese national team, but Euro 2008 was the tournament that meant the least to him.

Despite this, Ronaldo still had a chance to put in a showpiece performance, scoring one goal and assisting two more in the group stage win over the Czech Republic.

Euro 2012

Playing for Real Madrid at the time, Ronaldo became the top scorer at Euro 2012. He scored three goals, including two in the group stage against the Netherlands.

Portugal’s quarter-final match against the Czech Republic ended in a draw with 10 minutes remaining, so the Portuguese needed something special from him.

His powerful header in the final minutes of the match took Portugal through to the semi-finals, where they lost to Spain on penalties.

Euro 2016

Ronaldo scored three goals at Euro 2016 as Portugal won the title CHAMPIONS after beating France 1-0 in extra time in the final.

After being injured in the first 16 minutes of the match against France, he was forced to watch the match from the bench.

However, the Portugal captain became a cheerleader and helped his teammates achieve a historic victory.

By the end of Euro 2016, he had equalled Michel Platini’s record, scoring nine goals.

Euro 2020

Ronaldo made history again FIVE goals at Euro 2020, the most of any player at the Euro.

However, it can be said that it was the least exciting match for Portugal, who were eliminated in the 1/8 finals after a 1-0 defeat to Belgium.

Thanks to the goals scored in this tournament, Ronaldo became the top scorer of the European Championship with 14 goals.
