A 6-year-old girl died in a house fire in Bayonne

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said a 6-year-old girl died following a multi-alarm fire at a Bayonne home.

The fire was reported just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday at the two-story home at 438 Avenue C. The prosecutor says firefighters found the girl unconscious while trying to put out the blaze. She has been identified as Saniya Felton. Felton was pronounced dead just after 1 a.m. Monday.

A woman who lives on the first floor of the residence told News 12 New Jersey she believes the child who died lived on the second floor. The woman said she and her two children managed to escape and tried to help the other family.

“I was just trying to do what I had to do to get my son out. And then I tried to go upstairs and help the little girl,” the resident said.

The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Bayonne Fire Department are investigating the fire. Officials say foul play is not suspected.

Anyone who may have any information about the fire is asked to contact the prosecutor’s office at: ul 201-915-1345.
