GBI investigates officer involvement in Toccoa shooting

Moments ago, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation issued a press release regarding the manhunt and officer-involved shooting that occurred today in Toccoa.

At the request of the Toccoa Police Department, GBI agents are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Toccoa, Georgia. Montavious Cantrell Winkfield, 37, of Toccoa, is wanted in connection with the incident. No officers were injured in the incident.

Initial information indicates that on Monday, July 1, 2024 at approximately 2:10 p.m., Toccoa Police Department officers stopped a vehicle near Diagonal Street in Toccoa, Georgia. Winkfield exited the vehicle and began shooting at officers. One of the officers fired a gun at him and he fled. Winkfield is still at large.

The Toccoa Police Department has issued arrest warrants for Winkled for two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer. Law enforcement is working to locate and arrest him.

This investigation is active and ongoing. Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be forwarded to the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review and prosecution.
